Global Trade Tensions Threaten AI Sector Growth

Credit: Reuters
he International Energy Agency (IEA) has raised concerns that escalating global trade conflicts could impede the expansion of the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, particularly by affecting data center operations.
Key Details
Impact on Data Centers: The IEA reports that the U.S., China, and the EU are projected to account for 80% of the anticipated growth in data center demand by 2030, driven largely by AI applications. Trade disputes may disrupt this trajectory.
Reduced Electricity Consumption: In a scenario influenced by trade conflicts, electricity consumption by data centers could decrease to 670 TWh from the projected 945 TWh, indicating a significant slowdown in data center expansion.
U.S. Electricity Demand: Data centers in the U.S. are expected to represent nearly half of the country's electricity demand growth through 2030. However, the surge in demand has led tech companies to overwhelm power utilities with capacity requests, potentially overestimating future power needs.
Project Delays: Approximately 20% of planned data center projects are facing delays due to grid strain and shortages of essential infrastructure.
Geographical Bottlenecks: Notably, 50% of U.S. data centers under development are clustered in existing hubs, raising concerns about localized bottlenecks and infrastructure strain.
The IEA emphasizes the need for collaboration with tech firms to understand and manage the electricity requirements crucial for AI expansion.

EU Invests in AI Gigafactories to Compete with U.S. and China

The European Union has unveiled plans to establish AI gigafactories, aiming to bolster its position in the global AI landscape and compete with leading nations.
Key Details
AI Gigafactories Initiative: The EU intends to create facilities housing approximately 100,000 cutting-edge AI chips—four times the amount currently being installed elsewhere—as part of its AI Continent Action Plan.
Significant Investment: A total of €200 billion ($219 billion) is earmarked for this initiative, with €150 billion from over 20 investors and an additional €20 billion allocated for up to five gigafactories. Public-private partnerships will support the high infrastructure costs.
Legislative Support: The EU is preparing a Cloud and AI Development Act to stimulate private investment and aims to triple its data-center capacity within the next 5–7 years.
Additional Initiatives: Plans include developing data labs and launching an AI Act Service Desk to facilitate compliance with comprehensive AI regulations.
Global Context: This move responds to major initiatives such as the $500 billion Stargate venture in the U.S. and China's advancements in AI, including DeepSeek's notable performance despite hardware limitations.
The EU's strategic investments underscore its commitment to becoming a significant player in the global AI arena.
